Friday, June 14, 2019 at 7:20 pm: Bag It. Plastic Travesty Can Be Cured!

Plastic shopping bags, single use disposables, plastic packaging, water bottles, straws and tons of other plastic discards are clogging our landfills . . . killing whales and other sea life . . . disrupting our human endocrine systems. For some of us, what disappears on trash day, disappears from our consciousness and conscience. But this film, Bag It, will rouse us to the enormity of the problems – of mounting non-decomposable plastic trash and its’ spreading toxicity, not to mention the precious petroleum resources wasted. Bag It also will confirm for us the feasibility of multiple corrective actions – some of which are already underway in some places, like right here in the DuPage County area! For more information, go to http://www.bagitmovie.com/.

In our discussion following this engrossing documentary, we will delve into the initiatives we can support. Consider sharing this notice with friends and with one or more managers and employees at your favorite markets, shops, and restaurants – because they have particular systemic leverage on our communal plastics problem. Possibly bring them along to watch and discuss with us what we all can do, including in business and as consumers, to cut way back on the plastics we buy that are just thrown away. Our local efforts promise positive local-to-global impacts.

Friday, July 12, 2019 at 7:20 pm: Homing In On Causes & Cures for Homelessness

Filmmaker Diane Nilan probably knows as much as anyone in the USA about the trials and tribulations of homeless persons amongst us. She and her Naperville-based national nonprofit organization HEAR US brought Just Views participants two of her earlier productions about youth and adult homelessness in 2009 and 2013. This night she brings us two short documentaries from her ongoing series, Worn Out Welcome Mat, covering the often ignored issue of families/youth not recognized as homeless because they're doubled up.

These docs expose intersecting complicating factors of poverty, mental illness, drug use and prostitution. During the audience discussion about all this, Diane will tell us about a legislative effort to address these problems: The Homeless Children and Youth Act -- being considered by two Naperville area congresspersons, Bill Foster and Sean Casten, who sit on the House Finance Committee. We'll also learn about the HEAR US 2020 VisionQuest journey launching from Naperville on July 20th. For more info on these projects, go to https://www.hearus.us/ and http://helphomelesskidsnow.org/.
