Recent and Upcoming Just Views Programs

Friday, September 14, 2018 at 7:20 pm: Reinventing Power: America’s Renewable Energy Boom     (SEE SEPT. 14 PARKING UPDATE BELOW.)

Join us for a screening of “Reinventing Power”, produced by Transit Pictures for the Sierra Club. This inspiring and empowering film takes us across the country to hear directly from people working on clean energy projects: Rebuilding what’s broken, rethinking what’s possible, and revitalizing communities. Reinventing Power shows how clean energy offers quality jobs, economic opportunity and planetary security. For more on the film, go to https://www.sierraclub.org/reinventing-power. Then, with the River Prairie Group of the Sierra Club (program co-sponsor) and other representatives of the DuPage Clean Energy Coalition, we’ll discuss the film and the Future Energy Jobs Act passed in Illinois. Come learn about the campaign to grow clean energy and energy efficiency, to build a carbon-free power sector, reduce pollution, and combat global warming. Our special honoree on this night is Jean McCollum, lady leading the team initiative to install solar panels on our Just Views' DUUC home site.

SEPT 14 PARKING UPDATE: As church lot will be closed for resealing, please park in lot for Edward Elmhurst Health (1804 N Naper Blvd, just east of Diehl Rd and Naper Blvd) or along Old Naperville Road by church.

Friday, October 12, 2018 at 7:20 pm: Dark Posts & Dark Funding

Yes, "dark posts" refer to the personalized, manipulative messages that have been deployed on some internet social media platforms. This night we will view and critique a recent www.CinemaLibreStudio.com film entitled "Trumping Democracy: Real Money, Fake News, Your Data". It delves into how big data and psychometrics – contemporary means such as those used by Cambridge Analytica – can be and already have been employed for various purposes, such as marketing and persuasion. This film also explores the sources of support for recent political applications of these means, including funding of Breitbart News by Robert Mercer. We'll put on our critical thinking caps and invite technology and political analysis resources to help us understand what has been transpiring, how it works, and any positive opportunities along with the dangerous threats that such tools and wealthy interests using them pose for people here and elsewhere now and in the near future.
